The Magic of Vinegar

I love to use ordinary every day ingredients and items from my kitchen cupboards for magical workings, it makes perfect sense to me to utilise things I already have without the need to spend a lot of money or order expensive and exotic items from thousands of miles away.

So…here is my take on using vinegar for magical workings:

(Acetic acid/water)

Any type of vinegar can be used to add the element of fire to your dishes or spell work. It is also an ingredient in the Four Thieves Vinegar used in Hoodoo for protection and getting rid of enemies.

Vinegar Magical Properties:

Fire energy, protection
Ruling planet – Mars
Element – Fire
Gender – Masculine

Herbal Vinegar

This can be made to include any kind of herb depending on the intent that you need; you could add garlic, mint or mustard to not only make a delicious dressing but also add to the protective energy that vinegar already has. Pop in some apple juice, fennel seeds or rosemary and you have created healing vinegar, the options are endless. It can be used on your food or in spell workings.

You will need:
A sterile bottle or jar with a lid
500ml/ 1 pint vinegar
2 cups or 2 good handfuls fresh herbs

The choice of vinegar is up to you whether you use brown, white wine, red or cider. Pop the herbs in your jar, if they are large leafed herbs you might want to chop them first. Pour over the vinegar then seal. Herbal vinegar benefits from being left to stand on a window in the sunlight. Depending on where you store your vinegar to infuse and how much sunlight it gets it will take between 1 to 3 weeks to infuse properly. When it is ready strain and pour into a sterile bottle or jar.

Four Thieves Vinegar

Legend has it that a band of four thieves (during the middle ages) stole bodies of those that had died from the plague. They made a lot of money in the process, but never succumbed to the plague themselves. When they were eventually arrested they made a deal to share the secret of their protection from the illness in exchange for their lives. Their secret was a vinegar blend that they made and covered themselves in to ward against the plague.

Four Thieves Vinegar can be used for protection against illness, personal protection, banishing and cursing your enemies.

Most variations can be used topically and ingested, but always check the ingredients first because some that are for topical use contain herbs that may cause sickness or even be poisonous.

Recipes will vary but the base is …well…vinegar! You can use white vinegar but cider or red wine vinegar works well. Add to your vinegar any or all of the following ingredients (trust your intuition on which ones to add):

Cider, red wine or white vinegar
Pepper – black or red
Mustard seeds

Add your ingredients to the vinegar and put in a sealed bottle or jar, leave in a dark place for 3 or 4 weeks. You can then either leave all the herbs in the liquid or strain it into a new bottle.

Four Thieves Vinegar can be taken internally – one teaspoon a day to protect against illness. You can also use it as a gargle for sore throats. Soak a cloth in the vinegar and inhale to clear your sinuses.

Add a couple of tablespoons of Four Thieves Vinegar to your bath water for protection. It can also be used to sprinkle around your boundary to create a circle of protection.

To use as a jinx against someone, use something personal from them such as a strand of hair or a photograph and put that into a bottle containing Four Thieves Vinegar, add nails and pins (9 of each works well), add a spoonful of graveyard dirt, shake the bottle and then bury it on their property… Just remember that jinxing and hexing may come with consequences…
